Layer two is emotional response profiling: a calibrated test using EchoDepth that captures how you genuinely respond to stimuli. It starts with a 30-second neutral face calibration — your personal baseline, before any stimulus is shown. Then you watch a series of short standardised clips and rate each one: like, neutral, or dislike. EchoDepth analyses 44 FACS Action Units as time-series data across each clip — capturing reaction timing, intensity, duration, and recovery, not just whether an expression occurred. The rating labels your AU data, anchoring the facial signal to what you actually felt. Both the AU time-series and your rating are stored as a matched pair. All processing happens on your device. No raw video is transmitted or stored.

Most beta users reported forgetting the camera was active within the first twenty seconds. The video content is engaging enough that you stop thinking about being observed. The emotion capture is passive — you're just watching something, not performing for anyone. The data you generate is mathematical, not a recording of your face.

Your emotional response does not need to be extreme to be useful. The system measures the full range of genuine response — from mild interest to strong engagement — and builds a profile from the cumulative pattern rather than individual peak reactions. Being yourself, at your normal level of expressiveness, is exactly what the system needs. Trying to react 'correctly' would actually make the profile less accurate.

For the onboarding stimulus phase: AU data is processed entirely on your device and never transmitted. What is stored is an anonymised time-series emotional profile. For video dates: the session is recorded with your explicit prior consent. Raw video is deleted within 48 hours post-session. Anonymised interaction features (AU patterns, synchrony, conversation balance) are retained alongside your private outcome response. You can delete your entire profile, emotional data, and all interaction data in one tap, in full compliance with UK GDPR.

Video dates are hosted inside the Attune platform — no Zoom link, no external tool required. Before the call begins, both participants explicitly consent to recording and post-session analysis. If either person declines, the date still goes ahead but no analysis occurs. After the date, each person privately submits yes or no for a second date. The response is sealed until both say yes — if only one says yes, neither person is told which way. No. Attune does not share user data with third parties, does not have an employer-accessible directory, and does not integrate with professional networks. Your profile, your matches, and your data are visible only to you and to the matches Attune introduces you to. We never sell data to advertisers.

No. Every Attune profile requires a live emotion-capture session to generate. Liveness detection built into the session means pre-recorded video, static images, and stolen likenesses are rejected. Involuntary micro-expressions cannot be reproduced from a photo. The people you match with on Attune are verifiably real.

Attune is designed to produce a small number of high-quality matches rather than a large swipe queue. The emphasis is on quality over volume — in our closed beta, 94% of matched users rated their first matched conversation as genuinely interesting or better. The number of matches will vary by your location and who is in the Attune pool, particularly at launch.

You set your own preferences for who you'd like to be matched with, and the emotion AI matching operates identically regardless of orientation or identity.
